Code Reviews: Reading Every Line No Longer Scales

I've been giving talks about code reviews since 2012, arguing that bug-finding is the reason teams introduce reviews, but rarely the reason they're worth it. They're how a team builds a shared understanding of quality. Agentic engineering has broken half of that.

When an agent writes the code, finding bugs suddenly matters again: correctness and security defects are measurably more frequent, review time has exploded, and reviewers spend their effort reconstructing intent that was never written down. Meanwhile pairing, ensemble programming and reading each other's code - the practices craft was built on - are disappearing.

Reading every line no longer scales. So where does quality get checked instead - upstream at intent and acceptance criteria, in automated checks, in review by other models, or by a human reviewer before it hits production?

You'll leave with a model for splitting review work between deterministic checks, AI reviewers and human judgment.

Andreas Rossberg is an independent researcher and engineer. By a few twists of fate, he became one of the designers of WebAssembly, author of its formalisation and specification, and champion of various proposals for enhancements. For a while, he was a Staff Software Engineer at Google, where he worked on V8, the JavaScript/Wasm virtual machine, and led V8's language feature team. Before his time in industry he was a post-doc researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems after receiving a Dr from Saarland University. His research interests mainly revolve around programming languages, ranging from foundational theory, over design, to implementation, as long as they aren't ugly.
