ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Technical Coach and Merciless Refactorer from Vienna. All about software craft: baby steps, TDD, refactoring, whole-team programming. I maintain mob.sh (listed in ThoughtWorks Technology Radar). Recently my focus has turned to AI-augmented coding: teaching coding agents a software crafter's approach. Software craft has always been about context and clarity.
TALK
Who Needs Craft Now?
As we move toward a world where coding agents do more of the work, what does that mean for software craft? Do we still need it? Or is it already nostalgia? To answer that, we have to understand what actually makes software craft work. As a long-time software crafter, I’ve learned the hard way that how fast and far you can go is determined by what’s under the hood: the design of the code and its changeability, which come down to its simplicity and the limits of our cognitive capacity. Agents have that same limit. So I decided to find out whether craft could keep them inside it, to evolve systems in a sustainable way. I’ll show you how I designed an agent I set loose to run unattended, and what happened next. And what it takes to apply software craft with agents on gnarly, untested legacy code.
