ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Lutz is an independent consultant working at the intersection of software architecture and organizational design, a frequent conference speaker, and a blogger. Until recently, he was Head of Engineering at a FinTech start-up. Previously, he led engineering teams building software for container shipping, online retail, financial institutions, and cruise ship entertainment systems. His current focus is on event-driven architecture for highly available and scalable systems.
TALK
Event Driven Workflows
Event-Driven Architecture has become a popular choice for building microservices. At least in theory. Talks and articles praise its potential for scalability, reliability, and decoupling. In practice, however, many teams struggle with a crucial challenge: how do we implement complex business workflows that span multiple domains?
Often, they quickly fall back on “traditional” coordination mechanisms such as workflow engines, durable execution tools, and the Saga pattern. But is that really the way? This talk asks a fundamental design question: are orchestration-centric solutions a requirement for complex cross-domain workflows, or a symptom of modeling problems carried over from monolithic systems?
In this session, we explore a purely event-driven style of workflow design. Rather than transferring monolithic workflows into distributed systems, we look at how event-driven design invites a different way of thinking: not to better manage complexity, but to reduce it.
