ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Marius, a Senior DevOps Engineer at Hamburg’s fast-growing adtech company, adjoe. Since he joined around four years ago, Marius has been on a mission to enhance the reliability and scalability of our backend, an event-driven microservice architecture written in Go and powered by Kubernetes. His passion for coding and Kubernetes doesn’t stop here. Marius also contributes to a range of open-source projects, constantly pushing his skills and knowledge forward. When he’s not scaling systems or optimizing code, you’ll find him hosting board game nights or smashing tennis balls on the padel court.

15 Dev Environments were not enough - Embracing Ephemeral Environments

Since I joined adjoe, we have grown from 35 people to almost 300, and at the same time, we grew from 3 to 15 dev environments. This became a nightmare to maintain and somehow was still never enough. To solve this problem once and for all, we introduced ephemeral environments that developers can create on demand whenever they need them. Each ephemeral environment creates ~100 microservices in a new dedicated kubernetes namespace, 300 SQS queues, 250 DynamoDB tables and much more. All up and running in 10 minutes. Real infrastructure, no mocks. In this technical deep dive you'll learn about the architecture that powers it all and why we forked the aws-terraform-provider for extra speed gains.

Researcher and Engineer · Independent

Andreas Rossberg is an independent researcher and engineer. By a few twists of fate, he became one of the designers of WebAssembly, author of its formalisation and specification, and champion of various proposals for enhancements. For a while, he was a Staff Software Engineer at Google, where he worked on V8, the JavaScript/Wasm virtual machine, and led V8's language feature team. Before his time in industry he was a post-doc researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems after receiving a Dr from Saarland University. His research interests mainly revolve around programming languages, ranging from foundational theory, over design, to implementation, as long as they aren't ugly.
