TALK
It Depends: the final and honest take on client-side AI
Client-side AI is having a moment. With tools like Transformers.js and APIs like WebGPU, we can now run sophisticated ML models directly in the browser - no server required. But should we? In this talk, we'll cut through the hype and explore when client-side AI actually makes sense. We'll look at the technical foundations (quantization, tokenizers, model architectures), dive into real-world use cases, and compare the trade-offs: privacy vs. performance, latency vs. model size, accessibility vs. capability. From image processing to language models, we'll examine which tasks thrive client-side and which still belong on the server. Sometimes the answer is clear, sometimes it's nuanced, and sometimes a hybrid approach is the way forward - it depends!
