ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Ole Michaelis is the Head of Engineering at 1KOMMA5º, a unicorn scale-up in renewable energy and clean tech. He’s passionate about event-driven software engineering and building high-performing remote teams. From RailsConf to JSConf, Ole enjoys sneaking onto stages to talk about software, teams, and tech. Beyond his day job, he co-founded SoCoded and curates http://slidr.io/, a streamlined slide-sharing platform. Ole is a passionate software lead who loves traveling and Mexican food. This self-proclaimed “bad” German can juggle, treasures time with his two kids, and still, defiantly, dislikes beer and soccer.

TALK

Nobody Hands You a Hat: You’re a Manager Now

You got promoted. Congratulations. Somewhere in the excitement, you probably expected a moment where someone hands you the hat, the one that makes you a manager, that tells you what to do and how to be. That moment never comes.

What does come is subtler and stranger. You’re the same person you were last week, but your words don’t weigh the same anymore. A casual comment lands as a directive. An offhand opinion becomes the plan. You didn’t change, but how you’re heard did, and nobody warned you.

This talk is about what you do with that weight. Most new managers spend it protecting the business, the metrics, the story points. I want to make the case for spending it somewhere else: on your people. On being honest, standing up for your team, and holding the ground for what’s right even when it’s uncomfortable.

We’ll talk about values, the ones most of us quietly agree with but rarely have the guts to defend out loud, and why defending them isn’t soft. It’s the job. If you’ve just crossed into management, or you’re about to, this is the talk I wish someone had given me.
